I make the assumption you are using a Shared Datasource.
Did you check the Datasource on the report server using report manager (or SharePoint interface if you are using integration mode)?
Just an idea but when you deploy a shared data source using the report designer, it won't replace an existing datasource with the same name on the server (unless you have modified your configuration for allowing it).
Could it be that you had already deployed the Datasource without the connection string?
