Though Report Builder 2.0 does not make it possible to create reports relying on Enesys RS Data Extension from scratch, you can take advantage of its features for designing an existing report (relying on Enesys RS Data Extension) located on a report server.

It is important to note that Report Builder 2.0 will only produce reports compatible with SSRS 2008. Therefore, the information provided in this article does not apply for a SSRS 2005 installation.

The first release of Report Builder 2.0 does not support Custom Data Extension locally. It is therefore not possible to create a complete report relying on Enesys RS Data Extension from scratch. There is however a new interesting possibility provided with Report Builder 2.0 which is the ability to directly edit a report stored on a Report Server.

In that mode, Report Builder 2.0 will not rely on locally configured data sources but rather on data sources configured at the server level. When previewing, the report will be executed directly on the server.

With those limitations and features in mind, Report Builder 2.0 seems like an interesting tool to provide power users with for designing reports relying on Enesys RS Data Extension. The only prerequisite is that the report to be designed should be first created using Business Intelligence Development Studio 2008 and deployed on a report server.

One interesting side effect of not supporting custom data extension locally and therefore not being able to build a report addressing an Enesys RS Data Extension data source from scratch is that you can be confident that it will not be possible to modify inadvertently the report's data set while manipulating the report with Report Builder 2.0.

Here is a summary of the process that could be set up for report's creation:

The following presentation shows how to open an existing report located on a server and modify its layout within Report Builder 2.0:

In a future version of Enesys Query Builder tool we will add the possibility to publish a report directly to a report server. Basically, the report will just include the necessary dataset definition, based on the query constructed within the Query Builder tool, for being able to design the report within Report Builder 2.0. This will make it possible to build a complete report without having to go through Business Intelligent Development Studio.
